Two mobile phones and 20 packs of cigarettes were recovered from two inmates of Amritsar Central Jail.
The accused have been identified as Joban Singh of Kathunangal Amritsar and Samsher Singh alias Shera of Batala in Gurdaspur.
Both the accused were booked under various sections of the Prisons Act at the Islamabad police station based on a complaint filed by the jail authorities.
The first case was registered on the complaint of Assistant Jail Superintendent Naresh Pal. He said, “On Wednesday, near Chakkian 8 High Security Area, Shera picked up a parcel which was thrown by someone from outside the jail. A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan tried to take the parcel from the accused but failed.
He said, “Shera came out of the cell and after inserting the SIM card, she gave the mobile phone to prisoner Romanjit Singh. Romanjit later dropped the mobile phone and the parcel towards Barracks 2 as instructed by Shera. A CRPF jawan informed the control room about the incident. When our team of prison staff led by Superintendent Security Raja Navdeep Singh conducted a search operation in the barracks, a mobile phone and 20 packs of cigarettes were recovered.
Similarly, a second case was registered on the complaint of Assistant Jail Superintendent Suraaz Muhammad. He said a mobile phone with a SIM card was recovered from Joban Singh from the jail during a routine check.
The Amritsar city police will bring both of them under a production warrant to clarify the link between mobile phones and cigarette smuggling in the jail premises.
