Acer Chromebook Spin 714: A premium Chromebook to beat | Techy Kings

[ad_1]

Acer in 2010 One of the best Chromebooks of 2021 was the Spin 713, and now it has repeated that success with the Chromebook Spin 714. It’s not far from its predecessor in terms of offering a premium two-in-one, but Acer has made some changes to keep it competitive. And while The HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook A step up from the Spin 714 in terms of design and features, the Acer is a much better value and slightly better than the HP, which is why it won the Editors’ Choice award.

such as

  • Excellent performance, long battery life
  • Pluggable USI stylus
  • 1080p web camera
  • Sustainable construction

Don’t love

  • A small touchpad
  • No microSD slot.

For the Spin 714, Acer moved from a 13.5-inch, 2,256×1,504-pixel touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio to a 16:10 14-inch, 1,920×1,200-pixel touchscreen. It’s low resolution but has around 100% sRGB color gamut coverage this time around. The display is fairly bright, although you’ll be battling reflections outdoors.

Although I prefer the 3:2 aspect ratio for productivity and stylus use, the 714’s display still gives you more vertical space compared to a 16:9 widescreen, and it feels balanced overall, slipping easily into a bag. And for those who want to take notes, draw a floor plan, or use it as a digital whiteboard, Acer has placed a slim USI stylus under the front-left edge of this Chromebook.

The Spin 714 is aimed at mixed workers, students and teachers, and anyone looking for a more powerful Chromebook for productivity. As such, it’s not the most exciting design, but it’s built sturdier than many cheaper models. The display is covered with anti-bacterial Gorilla Glass for added durability and the reinforced aluminum body is mil-spec tested (MIL-STD-810H) to protect against small drops, vibrations, rain, dust, high and low temperatures and humidity. The reinforced body may be at least partially responsible for the 3-pound weight, which is only heavy when compared to smaller, less expensive Chromebooks.

At launch in May, Acer is expected to offer a high-end configuration with up to an Intel Core i7-1260P, up to 16GB of RAM and up to a 512GB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 SSD, but that’s not yet available. . For most users, however, the configuration I tested will be more than adequate.

The Spin 714 is a little thick to hold in tablet mode, but it’s fine on a desk or lap.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is Intel Evo certified, which means it meets certain performance requirements, battery life (up to 10 hours in this case), responsiveness, and wireless and wired connections, among other things. The Spin 714 showed no signs of slowing down with regular productivity use — Microsoft Office PWAs, Chrome, Slack, basic photo editing in Photoshop Express — as well as entertainment like cloud and Android gaming and streaming video. Battery life on our streaming video was excellent, lasting 13 hours, 38 minutes.

Top-flight features include Wi-Fi 6e and Bluetooth 5.2, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports (one on each side for convenient charging and docking), a comfortable backlit keyboard, and a full-HD webcam with privacy shutter. The webcam and speakers are much better than what you’ll find on a typical Chromebook, so if you spend a lot of time zooming, groups, and meeting, you’ll be happy with what’s built in here. And the fans stayed whisper-quiet, even in droves. Really the only disappointment is the touchpad and that is simply due to its size. It works fine, but it’s too small.

Currently, the Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is one of the best productivity Chromebooks available. As far as the overall design goes, it might be a bit clunky, but it’s built for durability. Otherwise, you’re getting good performance and battery life, a decent display, a dockable style, and solid connectivity and assembly features. If you find it for sale, it is even available at a reasonable price. But not everyone needs all that in a Chromebook, and there are more affordable options available to us. List of the best Chromebooks. This includes Acer’s Chromebook Spin 513A fanless version of the Spin 713 with the same 13.5-inch, 2,256×1,504-pixel touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio.
