Acer’s Chromebook Spin 714 ($729) is a smart, powerful, productive 2-in-1 Chromebook that offers a hint of posh curb appeal. With an Evo-certified Intel Core i5 1235U processor, Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, the Spin 714 isn’t your garden-variety Chromebook. It’s a highly portable, productivity-focused laptop, whether you’re a student, teacher or remote worker.
The Spin 714’s 14-inch, 1920 x 1200 touchscreen is bright, colorful and responsive. Add in the 16:10 aspect ratio display made of anti-bacterial Gorilla Glass, add in the sturdy all-aluminum chassis, and it’s no wonder the Spin 714 passed the MIL-STD-810H durability test with flying colors.
Chromebooks aren’t my favorite thing, but the Spin 714 won me over. From the moment I opened it, I was impressed with the look, feel, layout and display. So let’s jump in and take it for a spin.

The $729 Acer Chromebook Spin 714 comes with a 14-inch, 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) touchscreen, a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U CPU with integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD for storage.
There’s only one other configuration of the Spin 714, and it features an Intel Core i7-1260P CPU, Intel Iris Xe graphics, 16GB of RAM, and the same display for $1,199.99.

Acer’s Chromebook Spin 714 slate blue, aluminum construction means it’s meant to be durable, and as I mentioned earlier, it’s MIL-SPEC 810H tested. This productivity Chromebook has some nice cool metallics in the slate blue color, but it’s the chrome accents that give it that subtle elegance and add a muted business casual style.
When you open the cover, the 360-degree hinges feel solid and sturdy on your desk, upright, in tent mode for watching videos, or as a tablet.
The backlit chiclet-style keyboard above the chrome-accented touchpad feels great, even in my hands. Under the front left corner, you’ll find the Stylus Garage, which charges the Stylus. Above all, there’s a 14-inch, 16:10 ratio touchscreen display that houses an FHD 1080p webcam.
At 12.3 x 8.8 x 0.7 inches and weighing 3.2 pounds, the Spin 714 is the heaviest member of our comparison group. The Asus CX 9 (12.7 x 8.1 x 0.7 inches) tied for a lightweight Chromebook at 2.5 pounds, with the super-portable HP Chromebook x2 11 (9.9 x 4.6 x 0.3 inches).

The audio performance of the Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is strong, as it reproduces audio cleanly, with crisp depth and clear mids and highs. It’s no boom box, but the Spin holds its own and offers more than enough audio performance to watch your favorite shows and listen to music while you work. Google Docs. The backlit chiclet-style keyboard on the 14-inch Spin 714 is huge and a joy to type on. The keyboard is extremely clicky, responsive and decent. I took the 10-finger speed typing test and scored 91 wpm with 96% accuracy, much better than the standard 85 wpm and 88% accuracy.
The 4.1 x 2.5-inch touchpad is spacious, responsive and feels precise when navigating web pages or documents. It performed well during my time using it. Multi-touch gestures.

Every time I get my hands on a touchscreen, my first thought is that I better have a stylus, which the Spin happily does. Concealed in the left-hand compartment, the USI Style easily slides out of the garage, fully loaded and ready to go.
The quick charge USI Stylus (15 minutes full charge with 240 minutes of active use) has 4,096 different levels of pressure sensitivity because I found the pen strokes to be accurate and precise when taking notes and drawing.
Overall, the stylus felt great, and was not only fun to use, but also really useful.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 challenges my natural mistrust of any Chromebook that costs more than $500, mostly for its good display, powerful performance, and business-friendly styling. I really like the Spin myself, and I’ve happily used it to quickly push documents and watch video content in great detail. The stylus was comfortable, worked wonderfully, and allowed me to quickly take handwritten notes and pictures while on vacation.
