Once I find a game I love, it’s hard to put it down. Also, it’s hard for me to find time to catch my breath and immerse myself in games for a few hours when I have to do chores, walk the dogs, and stop being late. As a result, I usually don’t play much when I’m at home. As much as I love my Switch, it’s just too big to fit in most of the bags I take with me when I leave my apartment, so it’s gathering dust in its dock until I have some time to sit on the couch and play a game or two.

Like the Switch or Steam Deck, the Backbone has joysticks and buttons on both sides of the controls, all of which are comfortable and enjoyable to use even during long gaming sessions. It works with games you’ve downloaded from the app store (if the developer has added support for hardware controllers), such as Retro bowl or Gunfire Reborn, and it’s compatible with cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming. Apple Arcade has an impressive library of games designed to work with hardware controllers as well, so even if you can’t play Switch games with Backbone, you still have plenty of options.

The bottom of the controller has a 3.5 mm. a headphone jack (or, of course, you can use wireless headphones), as well as a USB-C or Lightning port (depending on whether you have an Android or iPhone model) for charging so the battery doesn’t die. Fortnite. The Backbone itself is powered by your phone battery, so it doesn’t need a Bluetooth connection, so you don’t have to worry about running out of battery before you head out the door – just throw it in your bag and you’re all set again.

This convenience is where Spine shines. Sure, the Switch or Steam Deck can fit in most backpacks without too much trouble, but I still always have my phone, and the iPhone and Backbone can easily fit in most small bags, fanny packs, or even a decent-sized clutch. The added portability—and the console experience that Backbone provides when paired with a good game—turned gaming into a top-notch experience on my iPhone that can follow me almost anywhere.

If I have some time to spare before a doctor’s appointment or a long commute, I can pull out the Backbone, pop my phone into it, and lose myself in one of my favorite games. It can be a simple unfair card game Kill Spire where I can get a few laps done pretty quickly, a hard day’s work on my farm Stardew Valleyor even immerse yourself in a world overrun by zombies The last of us via Playstation Remote Play. No matter what mood strikes me, there’s a game to match, and I can do it all from my iPhone screen.
