New Delhi In a new foray into PC manufacturing in India, Taiwanese PC brand Acer has announced a partnership with Dixon Technologies to manufacture laptops in the country. The laptops are manufactured at Dixon’s Noida factory and produce up to 500,000 units per year.

Acer said it will provide Dixon with the know-how and processes to manufacture high-tech laptops.

Acer currently manufactures desktops, all-in-one PCs and tablets at its Puducherry facility. “Acer manufactures a range of laptops for key segments, including the education segment, with Acer’s global manufacturing practices and guidelines,” Harish Kohli, president and managing director, Acer India, said in a statement.

Sudhir Goel, Chief Business Officer, Acer India, said the company manufactures desktops, all-in-one PCs and tablets in India. “With these new initiatives, we can produce a complete PC product range,” he added.

Asher said that the new manufacturing unit will create new employment opportunities for the youth of the country and help in the expansion of auxiliary electronics industries by introducing international manufacturing standards in India.

With 8.6% PC market share and 381,000 unit shipments in the September 2021 quarter, Acer is the fourth leading PC brand in India according to International Data Corporation (IDC) after HP, Dell and Lenovo.

Despite its popularity among individual buyers, 60% of Acer’s revenue in India comes from the commercial segment, particularly government projects.

Dixon Technologies is a home contract manufacturer that makes smartphones, TVs, washing machines, light bulbs and CCTV cameras. The key customers are Motorola, Philips, Syska, Samsung, Panasonic. This is their first laptop manufacturing unit.

Dixon is one of the first contract manufacturers in India to be approved by the IT Hardware Manufacturing Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program. In the year After the success of the PLI plan for smartphone manufacturing in 2020, the Indian government approved it 7,325-crore PLI scheme for laptops, tablets, multipurpose and servers by February 2021. The plan is to manufacture laptops and tablets on an invoiced basis. 30,000 and above 15,000, respectively.

“Acer India is a leading PC brand in India and one of the most recognized companies globally. We are happy to enter this category and manufacture laptops in India,” added Sunil Vachani, CEO, Dixon Technologies.

Demand for laptops in India remains strong despite the reopening of offices and the return to colleges and work. According to IDC, India shipped 4.3 million PC units including laptops, desktops and workstations in the September 2021 quarter.
