Patna: The Patna High Court has ordered the state government and the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMCTo submit a status report within four weeks on the number of legally established slaughterhouses within the municipal limits of Patna.

It directed the state and the PMC to provide details on the implementation of relevant laws and rules related to environment, public health and hygiene, as well as the law preventing cruelty to animals.
The Patna High Court counsel for the petitioner had urged the court not to allow slaughter of animals in public places, which is unsanitary and contagious and especially dangerous for school children.
The petitioner also requested the court to direct the authorities concerned to allow the sale of meat, fish and chicken only in areas identified and notified by the municipal corporation.
Terming the PIL as “of vital importance to public health and hygiene”, the division bench sought a detailed response from the respondents regarding compliance with environmental and municipal laws. Now the matter will be heard on August 30.
