Thanks to No. 3 Michigan outlasting Illinois with a last-minute field goal, 19-17, Iowa entered the game against Minnesota in complete control of its Big Ten West destiny.
The Hawkeyes jumped out to a 10-0 lead behind Spencer Petras connecting with tight end Sam LaPorta on big completions of 58 and 24 yards. The first set up a 38-yard Drew Stevens field goal. The second came on a 4th and 2 where Petras fought his way free of pressure, bought time and connected with LaPorta to set up his final 1-yard score on a quarterback sneak.
That was all the Hawkeyes did until Iowa and Stevens’ game-winning 21-yard field goal with 28 seconds left. Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell set up the game-winning score with what looked like a game-sealing pick-six.
Instead, the officials ruled he had stepped out (he didn’t) and Iowa had to win it with its offense. Petras found tight end Luke Lachey for 33 yards to the Minnesota 12-yard line on the first play of the offensive series following Campbell’s interception.
On a day when Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 263 yards, Iowa’s defense came up with a pair of big turnovers late. On the series before Campbell’s interception, Minnesota was driving for a go-ahead touchdown when Campbell forced a fumble that defensive lineman Deontae Craig recovered. That helped turn the tide in Iowa’s favor.
It ended with a Minnesota turnover on downs and the celebration was on. It is now eight years in a row that Floyd of Rosedale belongs to Iowa. Here were the best reactions on social media.
currently 17* in Minneapolis

Starting red zone tackles a yard outside of the red zone so they don’t count against the red zone stats is big brain thinking.

Not the result Iowa wanted after such an explosive first game, but points will be hard to come by today. #Hawkeyes take a 3-0 lead after a 38-yard field goal from Drew Stevens.

Spencer Petras is making big plays today. What an effort to get the ball to LaPorta on 4th and 2.
Iowa back in the red zone.

Can’t believe I’m even tweeting this because they only gave up 7 points, but the Iowa defense needs to check itself out here. Doesn’t come off the blocks, doesn’t hold leverage, doesn’t tackle well. Some truly uncharacteristically bad gameplay. #Hawkeyes

Feels like Iowa’s defense is on track for a big, timely play.

PICK SIX JACK CAMPBELL DO WE BELIEVE?
— BHGPunts (@BHGP) November 19, 2022
Also – Jack Campbell’s interception should have been a touchdown.
— David Eickholt (@DavidEickholt) November 19, 2022
Iowa got screwed. Completely screwed.
It’s a six for a touchdown by Jack Campbell and the officials took it away. Unreal. #Hawkeyes
