T-Mobile’s new activation fees will apply to more transactions | Techy Kings


Postpaid customers will no longer be able to save fees when ordering online

T-Mobile customers have traditionally been able to avoid device activation fees by skipping a retail store and buying a new phone online. According to The T-Mo Report (via Phandroid ), that loophole is about to close: The carrier will add a new device connection fee to most account changes that add a new device or line to a T-Mobile postpaid plan, regardless of whether it was done in a shop or at home.


Internal documents shared by T-Mo Report say the new $35 device connection fee will apply to “all postpaid mobile” devices “when activated or upgraded with T-Mobile,” including phones, tablets, smartwatches, public internet access points etc. It even includes BYOD, an acronym Bring your own devicesthis means a new line using your existing phone will also be charged $35.

The new DCC will not apply what device replacement. Changing a SIM or eSIM on an already activated device will not be charged, and customers using T-Mobile JUMP! renewal programs will be exempted from the fee “as a benefit of the program”. Business customers will only be charged if they activate a new device in-store, while prepaid plans are completely exempt.

The T-Mo Report notes that since there will no longer be a financial incentive to order a new device from home, this change will likely increase T-Mobile’s retail traffic. The new fee is set to go into effect in just a couple of weeks, starting on November 15th, so if you’re a T-Mo customer with a phone that’s looking a little run down, upgrading online sooner rather than later could save you a few bucks.
