LOWNDES COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) – On Tuesday, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office unveiled its own mobile app that keeps people informed about everything from traffic to sex offenders in the area.
“It’s designed to inform our community about the various aspects of law enforcement in the county,” Lowndes County Sheriff Christopher West said.
The app offers a most wanted list, the ability for citizens to request patrols, a link to other county resources and even a sheriff’s office employee directory. People can also use the app for things like being able to apply for handgun permits and keeping up with county inmates.
West says one of the most valuable tools for the community is a link to the county’s sex offender list.
“There are several dozen sex offenders in our area. We really want to let our residents know if they have one of these sex offenders living in their community,” West said.
West said the program also provides more transparency, giving citizens a glimpse into the day-to-day work of deputies. He said they do more than take people to jail and want to be visible in their community beyond that.
“We are social workers and nurses, we provide first aid services,” he said.
More features will be offered in the future.
