According to New Yorker writer and Middlebury College Schumann Distinguished Scholar Bill McKibben, Vermont’s news media glass is at least half full (“How Vermont’s Media Helps Keep the State Together: Investigative journalism matters — and so does community journalism,” New Yorker, Sept. 14, 2022).
According to VTDigger’s commentator Bill Schubart, who notes that he has been chairman so many boards, Vermont’s news media glass is at least half empty (October 23, 2022).
Neither of them mentioned that VTDigger has regional reporters throughout Vermont.
Schubart questions New American and Vermonter Paul Belogour’s purchase of the daily Bennington Banner and Brattleboro Reformer and the weekly Manchester Journal, and he is unaware that they have added journalists and the paper became a daily as of October 31, 2022.
Writing from southeastern Vermont, I also recommend the Chester Telegraph, The Commons of Brattleboro, Deerfield Valley News of West Dover, Eagle Times of Claremont (NH), Springfield Reporter and Vermont Journal, and The Shopper of Ludlow.
News of the “death” of local news media is exaggerated here: Vermonters across the state always want to know what’s going on there.
