Two young children died in a mobile home fire in western Indiana | Techy Kings

Two young children have died after a fire broke out in a mobile home in western Indiana, authorities said.

Athena Holdbrook, 3, and Aries Romine, 3 months, died Wednesday night in a fire at Northview Country Estates outside Brazil, Clay County Coroner Nick French said.

Both children died of smoke inhalation, French said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was reported around 8:30 p.m

“There’s still a lot of unanswered questions and conflicting stories, we can’t say anything yet as to the cause,” Posey Township Fire Chief Cody Barnard said.

Neighbor Michael Roberts Muhammad said he was with his family in the afternoon and ran into the house when he heard the screams.

“I tried to go in the front door but the heat was so intense and the smoke was so overwhelming. It felt like I was being pushed back. I tried to go back twice but couldn’t get in. I couldn’t do anything but fall on my knees and pray,” Muhammad said.

“It was scary to watch,” added neighbor Leeann Chandler, “knowing they’re still there and there’s nothing we can do.”

Barnard, the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

Brazil is about 55 miles (88.5) southwest of Indianapolis.
