Winnipeg has a new mobile overdose prevention website | Techy Kings

Winnipeg has a new mobile overdose prevention site, Manitoba’s first.

The new RV is the brainchild of Sunshine House, which aims to prevent overdoses through harm reduction services.

Some of these services include clean needles, drug testing kits, and a safer environment for people to use substances under peer supervision.

Sunshine House is exempt from Health Canada’s right to operate under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Sunshine House hopes the new mobile service will help consumers make more informed decisions.

“There’s a risk of people cutting things with other substances that can actually increase the risk to people taking them, and especially if you don’t know what’s in it (the drug), there’s a greater risk of serious effects like like death or injury or whatever it might be,” said Sunshine House Executive Director Levi Foy.

“So a site like this really helps prevent these severe consequences. We can do testing, we can intervene if needed.”

Sunshine House notes that it does not provide substances to people.

The organization hopes to raise funds to purchase equipment that allows better identification of toxic drugs.

The RV is located at 613 Main Street now through Sunday, 11:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. The RV will then be mobile from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m
